Tickets sold out the day they went on sale
for this weekends Saturday gig by hip-hops Great
White Hope, but as of this writing were still available for
the Friday show. The shows mark Eminems second appearance
in Japan following his debut at the 2001 Fuji Rock Festival.
Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the trash-talking Detroit
rapper and newly minted Oscar winner continues to swirl. The
latest celebrity feud to involve Eminem pits him and allies
Dr Dre and 50 Cent against rapper Ja Rule and his Murder Inc
The feud began when Ja Rule in the song Loose Change
called 50 Cent an informant and a snitch, saying that the
Southside Queens MC took a police order of protection out
against them after a fight in a studio a few years back. He
also attacked Eminem, rapping, Em, you claim your mother
is a crackhead and Kim is a known slut/So whats Haile
gonna be when she grows up?
Eminem protégé 50 Cent responded with a track,
The Realest Killas, dissing Ja Rule for being
obsessed with Tupac Shakur. Eminem went further, saying on
a new remake of Tupacs Hail Mary, Come
get me, if you want Shady/If Pac was here now/He would never
ride with Ja.
And if the hip-hop feud werent enough, Eminem has a
new raft of legal trouble awaiting him. As soon as he finishes
his gigs in Japan, hell be heading back to the US for
a court date May 30 to defend himself against a $1 million
defamation lawsuit filed by DeAngelo Bailey.
A former high school classmate, Bailey claims that Eminem
defamed him and damaged his career as an aspiring rapper when
he depicted Bailey as a bully. In the song Brain Damage,
on The Slim Shady LP, Eminem raps, I was harassed daily
by this fat kid named DeAngelo Bailey/An eighth grader who
acted obnoxious, cause his father boxes/So every day
hed shove me into the lockers/And he had me in the position
to beat me into submission
Another lawsuit, in which Eminem is co-named with Dr Dre,
involves a copyright dispute that alleges they sampled a song
without permission. Minder Music claims that the bass line
from Lets Get High, co-written by Eminem
and Dre, was sampled from the 1980 song Backstrockin.
Minder is seeking more than $3.5 million in damages.
Aside from his swirling personal and legal controversies,
Eminem will be riding a wave of positive publicity when he
arrives in Japan, with his Oscar-winning autopic, 8 Mile,
premiering in Japanese theatres this week. Opening for Eminem
at the cavernous Makuhari Messe convention center will be
50 Cent and D12.
Eminem plays Makuhari Messe on May
23 and 24 (sold out). See listings for details.
