Drum ' bass VIP Fabio
pulls into town to headline Liquid Room in another installment of Drum
& Bass Sessions' long-running parties, this time entitled "Liquid Funk
2000."
Hooking up with fellow breakbeats innovator Grooverider at the dawn of
dance in 1987, the pair launched what would be a long and fruitful partnership at pirate
radio station Phase One. With Fabio dropping funk and soul numbers on top of Grooverider's
hip hop beats, the pair began the experimentation which would lead to breakbeats, jungle,
and as it later came to be known, drum 'n' bass.
After establishing their reputation at Phase One, they went on to DJ together at acid
house club Mendoza and at the burgeoning numbers of raves across the UK, spinning a
mixture of Detroit house and early rave sounds.
Their pivotal work was to happen as an outgrowth of their residency at the seminal Rage
parties, where much of the early '90s breakbeats experimentation was tested out on
audiences.
Fabio and Grooverider can currently be heard on BBC Radio 1, where they host "One in
the Jungle," an attempt, they say, to "push drum 'n' bass firmly under the nose
of the masses."
