Sakura Hils disco 3000
From one of Japan' top pop
producers, Shinichi Osawa, comes Sakura Hills Disco 3000, an album shamelessly
dedicated to nostalgia for the '70s heyday of disco, featuring Osawa-produced songs by a
virtual who's who of the soulful Shibuya-kei style. As bandleader of acid jazz unit Mondo
Grosso, and increasingly as producer, Osawa has been central to the development of the
jazzy, housey, carefree sound which is at the heart of Shibuya-kei style. Of special note
on Sakura Hills is the buoyant new single "Game" by J-pop diva Bird.
Also participating are veteran singer Monday Michiru with the characteristically uplifting
"Real Thing," Towa Tei's (of Deelite fame) "Happy 2000," house
producer Satoshi Tomiie's offering "Inspired," Kyoto Jazz Massive, DJ Fantastic
Plastic Machine, singer Laurie Fine from electronic act Coldfeet, and a host of others
including singer Kathy Sledge from Sister Sledge. The release also marks the birth of
animated character, dancing dog Discotique Murphy, with Osawa's theme song
"Discotique Murphy's Theme" heading up the album. An upcoming Liquid Room record
release party will showcase performances by many Sakura Hills contributors and
provide a look at the current, healthy state of Shibuya-kei.
