Along with Audio Active, Dub Squad are one
of Japan's leading units pursuing a vision of electronica that pays tribute to Jamaica's
effects-laden reggae offshoot dub, while infusing it with the pulse of contemporary
Formed in 1993 as an ambient unit geared for the chill-out room, Dub Squad gradually
fleshed out their sound with propulsive, breakbeats-driven rhythm tracks, the result of
which can be heard on their recent and third release, Versus. The group's overtly dub
influences have been subsumed by a rhythmic vocabulary that owes more to drum'n'bass and
trance, an approach that proved itself highly effective at a recent Club Asia performance.
A trio consisting of Taro Yamamoto, Tatsuaki Masuko and Koji Nakanishi, Dub Squad possess
the almost telepathic ability to communicate with each other that comes from having played
together for almost a decade. They each trade off on synths, samplers and effects, and are
able to create songs organically through improvised jam sessions.
Debuting in 1996 with Dub in Ambient on Germany's After 6 AM imprint, they honed their
approach for Enemy Or Friends (NS-COM), their second release in 1998. Their growing
recognition lead to engagements at the Fuji Rock and Rainbow2000 festivals, bringing them
to their current position, which finds them equally comfortable in clubland and on the
live house circuit.
Dub Squad play Liquid Room on June 1 as part of Sunpower. See listings for details.
